Quick answer
A barcode or photo alone cannot confirm authenticity. Buy from the brand or a retailer it lists. Check any seal; compare batch codes if both box and container have them. For products sold in Korea, the outer package must show a batch number and a use-by date or period after opening.
Where should you buy to avoid fakes?
Start before you pay. Anua’s own guide to spotting fakes says, “Buying from Anua or authorized retailers is the most reliable way to reduce counterfeit risk before the package arrives.” It also warns, “Do not rely only on the product photo, because counterfeit sellers can use official-looking images.”
So check the brand’s own site for a list of authorized retailers, and compare it with where you’re about to order. YesStyle calls itself “the authorized distributor of 400+ Korean brands,” and that is its own claim. For shipping and returns at the three stores, see our US store comparison.
How do you spot a lookalike website or account?
Type the store’s address yourself rather than following an ad or a message, and read the spelling before you enter card details. Stylevana’s FAQ lists its official social media accounts and warns that other accounts claiming to be Stylevana are “fraudulent.” YesStyle’s online safety page warns about fake emails and says it “will never ask you to confirm your YesStyle.com account password” by email.
A price far below the brand’s usual price, a site you reached only through a social media ad, or a seller who asks you to pay outside the checkout are reasons to stop and check the brand’s retailer list first.
What should you check when the parcel arrives?
- The seal. Anua says to check “whether the outer box seal looks intact and has not been lifted or resealed.”
- The batch code. If both the box and container carry batch codes, compare them and ask the brand about any mismatch before use. Anua lists a seal that’s broken or batch codes that “do not match” among the signs that something is wrong.
- The barcode, scent and seller together. Anua says genuine products “should pass a barcode, scent, and seller check before they touch your skin,” and that a barcode alone doesn’t prove authenticity.
- The Korean box text. See the box below for what Korean law requires on the package.

On the Korean box: what the law requires
For products sold in Korea, the Cosmetics Act (Article 10(1)) lists ten things the outer package must show: the product name; the business’s name and address; all ingredients (with exceptions set by Prime Ministerial Decree); the volume or weight; a batch number (제조번호); a use-by date or a period after opening (사용기한 또는 개봉 후 사용기간); the price; for a functional cosmetic, the words 기능성화장품 or the functional-cosmetic symbol specified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety; cautions for use; and other matters set by Prime Ministerial Decree. Packages covered by the small-package exemption may carry a shorter list, but must still show the batch number and the use-by date or period after opening. If a period after opening is given, the manufacturing date must appear too.
A product made only for export may follow its destination country’s labeling rules, so a missing Korean line isn’t proof of a fake on its own. For a product labeled for sale in Korea, ask the store if you cannot find the batch number or the use-by date or period after opening. If a period after opening is shown, look for the manufacturing date too.
What is Korea doing about counterfeit cosmetics?
On June 16, 2026, Korea’s customs service signed an agreement with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea’s intellectual property office and the Korea Cosmetic Association to respond to counterfeit cosmetics together, according to official announcements. The agencies said the group would meet every six months to share information and coordinate online monitoring.
What if you think you received a fake?
Stop using it, photograph the box, any seal and any batch codes, and contact the store promptly. For eligible returns, YesStyle and Stylevana require a request within 14 days of receipt; Olive Young US’s return window is 30 days from delivery. Approval and product-condition rules still apply, so report a suspected counterfeit before sending anything back. Send the same photos to the brand’s customer service and ask it to help check the product.

Questions
Does a barcode prove a K-beauty product is real?
No. Anua says a barcode alone doesn’t prove authenticity. Check it together with the seal, the batch code and where you bought it.
Do Korean skincare products have expiry dates?
For products sold in Korea, the outer package must show either a use-by date (사용기한) or a period after opening (개봉 후 사용기간), plus a batch number (제조번호). If a period after opening is given, the manufacturing date must appear too.
What is a batch code on K-beauty?
It’s the manufacturing batch number, 제조번호 on a Korean box. If both the box and container carry batch codes, compare them and ask the brand about any mismatch.
Is it safe to buy K-beauty on social media shops?
Check the seller against the brand’s list of authorized retailers first. Anua warns that counterfeit sellers can use official-looking product photos.
